Construction Products Europe warns that failing to treat the sector as a strategic industrial value chain could be a costly mistake.
Europe’s construction products sector operates across a complex, highly fragmented value chain and requires consistent, supportive EU policy if it is to remain competitive, according to the industry’s main trade body.
Pascal Eveillard, president of Construction Products Europe, spoke with Euractiv after a Brussels workshop. He says that while policymakers are moving in the right direction, significant obstacles remain to delivering affordable, sustainable housing at the scale the continent needs.
CS: The European Commission has repeatedly warned that Europe must become more competitive in the face of growing competition from China, particularly in strategic industries. Do you think construction products are receiving the same level of attention from policymakers?
PE: Construction products are not yet receiving the same level of strategic attention as other sectors such as energy, semiconductors or automotive, despite their central role in Europe’s economy and sustainability transition.
