Just as they did with Lukas Nmecha 12 months ago, Leeds United have started their summer business with a free agent. Harry Wilson, 42 weeks after his deadline-day move to Elland Road collapsed, has agreed a deal to join from Fulham. The Wales international still needs to conclude a medical and then sign the contract, which would not commence until July 1, after his Fulham terms expire. But he is expected to become a Leeds player.Wilson, 29, was wanted last September and then had the season of his life in the Premier League. He has improved on the level Leeds initially wanted to recruit, is close with the four senior Wales internationals (Ethan Ampadu, Joe Rodon, Daniel James and Karl Darlow) on the books and is experienced enough to roll with the punches of the top flight’s bottom half.Last summer, all 10 arrivals at Leeds were aged between 25 and 28. Manager Daniel Farke benefited from a core group of players experienced enough to never get too high or too low across a 38-game season, which was always going to bring good and bad form. Wilson fits that model. So what should Leeds expect from their prospective attacker? One statistic alone puts this coup into perspective — last season, only eight players across the Premier League were directly involved in more goals than Wilson (10 goals, seven assists). There is no guarantee Wilson can produce last season’s numbers, but Leeds are acquiring a known quantity.Much in the same way Leeds felt confident last summer that a healthy Dominic Calvert-Lewin would perform well in the Premier League, Wilson fits that bill. When you compare Wilson with similar profiles on the continent, costing far bigger transfer fees with no record in the Premier League, it looks an eminently sensible move.Underneath that top line of 10 league goals, it is only fair to note Wilson wildly outperformed his expected goal (xG) tally. Based on the quality of the chances he was presented with last season, the data suggested he should have scored five or six goals, rather than 10.Only Antoine Semenyo and Junior Kroupi outperformed their xG to a greater degree in the Premier League.
