Bulgarian and sports circles are in shock after wrestler Zsanett Németh died in Sofia following a fall from a high floor at the Diana sports complex, authorities said. The incident occurred around 10:30 a.m. in an athletes’ residence building, where emergency teams and police responded, but she could not be saved. Investigators are currently carrying out procedural steps to determine the circumstances, with the Sofia Directorate of Interior Ministry (SDVR) examining multiple possible scenarios.
According to initial reports, Németh fell from the 11th floor of the building. While authorities have not issued an official conclusion, some sources cited by media outlets indicated that a suicide version is being considered, possibly linked to a personal dispute involving another athlete. Police, however, stressed that all hypotheses remain open as the investigation continues.
Németh, originally from Hungary and also holding Bulgarian citizenship, was considered a rising talent in women’s wrestling. She had recently joined CSKA and in March won a national title in the 76-kilogram category, establishing herself as one of the promising athletes in her division.
Her death has prompted strong reactions in the sporting community, where she was described as a dedicated and ambitious competitor with potential for international success. Reports also noted that she shared accommodation in the building with fellow wrestler Bilyana Dudova.
