Councillors of the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) complained about rising vacancies in the civic body’s Health Department.At the Council Meeting on Wednesday, councillors said the GCC should take measures to fill vacancies for doctors, nurses, and sanitary inspectors. Councillors have complained about an inadequate number of doctors and nurses in wards 144, 146, 150 and 155. They have also complained that the health and wellness centres developed in the second phase did not have air conditioning.GCC Commissioner G.S. Sameeran has inspected hospitals in various parts of the city and directed officials to improve services. He said: “The Councillors spoke about vacancies in UPHCs and Health and wellness centres. The vacancies under the NUHM were filled on November 3, 2024, and the further vacancies were filled using the waiting list through orders of the Commissioner dated May 13, 2026. The posts of medical officers and staff nurses (permanent positions) will be filled through the Medical Services Recruitment Board.
