Alessio Romagnoli is trading Serie A for the Qatar Stars League. Al Sadd SC has reached an agreement to sign the Italian center-back from SS Lazio for a transfer fee of approximately €3 million, closing a saga that first surfaced back in January.
The deal, which came together in early June 2026, represents a significant lifestyle change for the 31-year-old defender. But from a pure business perspective, it made sense for everyone involved.
A deal months in the making
This isn’t the first time Al Sadd came knocking. Back in January 2026, the Qatari club and Romagnoli were reportedly close to finalizing a similar move. That deal collapsed when Lazio president Claudio Lotito stepped in and blocked the transfer.
Five months later, the math changed. Romagnoli’s contract with Lazio was heading into its final year, which meant the club faced a familiar dilemma: sell now for a modest fee, or watch a player walk for nothing in 12 months.
