LifestyleHeatwaveA woman has shared a method to keep cool during these soaring temperatures using something you probably already have at home, and some say is even 'better than air conditioning'08:49, 24 Jun 2026Brits are currently sweltering as temperatures are set to reach 40 degrees in some areas, with parts of the UK under a red weather warning. It's the type of weather that's only acceptable if you're in swimwear, sitting around a pool at an all-inclusive resort, but people are expected to go about their daily lives as though they're not sweating buckets and low-key wishing for autumn.‌If you're looking for ways to stay cool that don't involve irritating your hayfever and drying your eyes out with a fan, there's a hack that might get you through the heatwave, but you have to be careful when you're doing it. Ames, who shares "tips, tricks, interests and having fun" on her TikTok page, shared a video of what she'll be doing as it gets seriously warm.‌"This might just be what gets me through the heatwave," she wrote over the top of the video. She recommended putting a hot water bottle in the freezer to make it cold, and then placing it on your body where you need relief.‌But Ames urged people to have a different hot water bottle for cold temperatures and a hot one."Make sure you don’t fill it completely as water expands when frozen! NOT TO BE USED WITH HOT WATER AGAIN, THOUGH, AS IT WILL SPLIT! Dispose after freezing!!" she explained.Content cannot be displayed without consent‌Freezing severely degrades the rubber or PVC, significantly increasing the risk of it bursting or leaking the next time you pour boiling water into it, so you just need to ensure that you separate them.As water freezes, it expands. This puts intense outward pressure on the seams and the stopper seal, warping or stretching the material.‌Because freezing compromises the bottle's structural integrity, attempting to use it as a standard hot water bottle later invites a high risk of rupturing and causing severe burns. In the comments of Ames video, someone wrote: "I've got this ready to put in my bed tonight. I have now dedicated this hot water bottle as my cold water bottle and won't be using it again with hot! Looking forward to a cool sleep tonight!"‌Another woman said that they've been doing this "since 1976," saying that they reckon it's actually "better than having air conditioning" in the house. There's one thing that's for certain, and that's that this hack is certainly a lot cheaper.‌Somebody asked: "Where do you put it in the bed?"Ames replied: "Put your feet on it! Best way to cool your body down!"Article continues below"I would never have thought to do such a clever idea," a TikToker praised her. Will you be trying this heatwave hack?
