New Delhi, June 23: An express train will start running between Amritsar and Lahore when rail traffic between India and Pakistan is resumed. An agreement to this effect was reached between the railway experts of the two countries to-day when talks began here on the restoration of the rail links that had snapped in 1965.The timings of the proposed express train are under discussion, keeping in view the connections to long distance mail and express trains at Amritsar and Lahore.The expert teams of India and Pakistan, which are now discussing the modalities of resumption of rail traffic, will divide themselves into two groups. The first group will go into the mechanical aspects of carriage and wagon fleets, loco arrangements etc. while the second group will sort out details about freight rating and compensation claims. The two groups will be formed after discussing the operational and mechanical issues connected with the expected passenger and goods traffic between the two countries consequent on resumption of the rail link. These discussions will be held by the two delegations in full strength.During the talks, the experts will discuss the basic principles for movement of passenger and goods traffic. Among the subjects, that will figure in the discussion, are, the creation of a wagon pool for interchange of goods traffic, detailed procedures for booking and accounts of rail traffic and regulations etc. Published - June 24, 2026 04:41 am IST
