Samsung has announced a new UFS 5.0 storage solution that’s twice as fast as existing options, and coming to future “flagship smartphones.”
Announced today, Samsung has revealed the “industry’s fastest” UFS 5.0 storage solution. The new product will deliver storage with read speeds of up to 10.8 GB/s and write speeds up to 9.5 GB/s.
Compared to UFS 4.1, that’s roughly twice as fast. The best UFS 4.1 solutions topped out around 4.3GB/s read and 4GB/s write, and even that was a huge bump up from UFS 4.0’s slower 4.2GB/s and 2.8GB/s read/write speeds.
Of course, with the times we live in, Samsung mainly pitches this as an advancement for on-device AI, where those faster speeds will indeed give AI models a considerable boost for processing larger data sets. But these speeds will also just be a boost in general to device performance, all while Samsung says UFS 5.0 improves power efficiency by over 40% compared to UFS 4.1 while also fitting into a 16.7% smaller package.
Samsung directly teases that UFS 5.0 will power future “flagship smartphones,” while its size and power improvements will also be good for wearables and XR devices. There’s no firm indication as to when we might see UFS 5.0 in a Galaxy smartphone, though – even the Galaxy S26 Ultra still uses UFS 4.1.
