The Tamizh Maanila Vivasaya Thozhilalar Sangam led protest demanding the recall of the Viksit Bharat – Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (VB-G RAM G) Act that replaced the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MNREGA), and called for strengthening of the two-decade-old MNREGA. The protesters gathered near the new bus stand and slammed the Union government for replacing the MNREGA.The association affiliated to the Communist Party of India (CPI) protested over a raft of demands regrading the rural employment guarantee programme. According to the protesters, the BJP-led Union government has systemically weakened and destroyed the MNREGS and, in turn, weakened rural livelihood and employment. The government had deliberately weakened the State by not transferring the funds due, alleges the association.Among the other demands included providing 200 days of work to the poor along with ₹700 per day as wage. The protesters also demanded that the scheme should be enforced in all municipalities and town panchayats. Published - June 23, 2026 08:00 pm IST
