The Communist Party of India (CPI), on Monday (June 8, 2026), led a massive protest against eviction notices issued to settlements on poramboke lands in Kelamangalam town panchayat. The protests were led by the party’s Thally MLA T. Ramanchandran alongside the CPI’s State Secretary M. Veerapandian.The Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR and CE) Board had issued, through the Revenue Department, notices to demolish houses built on poramboke lands in Jeeva Nagar, Sultan Pettai, Panathoppu, Virupatchi Nagar, and Anna Nagar.According to the protesters, over 1,500 houses, which have been existing for decades, have been notified for demolition and all these houses have been in existence with valid house receipt, door number, water and electricity connections. The CPI leaders held talks with the officials of the Revenue and the HR and CE departments. Following assurance that no action will be taken yet, the protests were dispersed.
