Nearly 770,000 plots of land across Greece have been registered as clear of dry undergrowth as required ahead of the summer wildfire season, authorities said Tuesday, a day after the deadline to complete the job expired.
Municipal and Fire Service teams will now begin inspections to ensure compliance, starting in areas that are deemed at the highest risk of wildfire.
Landowners or tenants who have not cleared their land, or who have but didn't register the fact on an online database, will face fines ranging from €100-2,000.
A total 765,489 plots were declared cleared by the end of the deadline Monday, an increase over last year.
Nevertheless, officials warned that many still remain choked with highly combustible dry undergrowth that poses a major fire hazard, and encouraged landowners - private individuals or state entities - to do the job even after the deadline.
