The deadline for landowners to clear their properties of undergrowth ahead of the summer fire season expired Monday with about 610,000 electronic declarations of compliance having been submitted.

As of Tuesday, the Fire Service and municipal officials will start inspections, beginning with areas where the fire risk is considered to be highest. Where necessary, municipal teams will clear uncut undergrowth and bill landowners for the work.

Fines for non-compliance will range from €100 for people who clear their land but don’t make an electronic declaration to a maximum €2,000. False declarations carry the risk of prosecution with a potential minimum six-month prison term and €5,000 fine.
