Umdoni Municipality is facing legal troubles after it failed to implement court order to give a DA councillor an executive seat.
A mayor, speaker, and municipal manager (MM) of Umdoni Municipality on KwaZulu-Natal's south coast might face legal trouble for allegedly defying two court orders to return an executive seat unduly occupied by the ANC and now left vacant, to the DA.
The seat, according to DA provincial chairperson Dean Macpherson was first assigned to the DA but ended up with the ANC in 2022 after the ANC in the municipality refused to officially hand it over.
An ANC councilor occupied the seat but vacated it after the Durban High Court ruling in 2023. It remains unoccupied because the council has allegedly not yet implemented the appointment, which both the High Court and the Supreme Court of Appeal (SCA) have supported.
Umdoni has not yet responded to questions sent to its spokesperson Sphelele Cele.
