Police have charged her spouse with murder following a nationwide manhunt.

The tragic killing of a primary school teacher in eastern Slovakia has revived concerns about how the country’s justice system addresses domestic violence cases, following revelations that the suspect had recently been released from custody and that the victim had unsuccessfully attempted to obtain a restraining order.

Police have charged a man from the town of Gelnica, identified under Slovak privacy rules only as Tomáš V., with the particularly serious crime of murder following the death of his 47-year-old wife, Zuzana, a local primary school teacher.

Officers discovered the woman dead on Saturday before launching a manhunt for what they described as a dangerous suspect. He was arrested hours later in a field near the village of Čaňa, where police also located his car. Prosecutors have requested that he remain in pre-trial detention while the investigation continues, according to Korzár.

The case has shocked the small eastern Slovak town but has also prompted scrutiny of decisions made in the months leading up to the killing.
