Lithuania has offered to help mediate a diplomatic dispute between Poland and Ukraine after a row over Second World War history escalated into a public exchange of state honours.
President Gitanas Nausėda's chief foreign policy aide, Asta Skaisgirytė, said both sides had acted too hastily and that Lithuania may need to step in to bring the two presidents back to the table.
"There was probably some heat from both sides," Skaisgirytė told Žinių Radijas on Tuesday. "Now it seems efforts will again have to be made to bring both presidents together so they can talk."
Parliamentary speaker Juozas Olekas echoed the concern, saying Lithuania was already working behind the scenes.
"It seems to me that we are seeing overly harsh language from both sides. During every meeting or visit to Kyiv or Warsaw, we try to smooth those edges and offer as much advice and mediation to our colleagues as possible," he told reporters.
