A Worcester man has been sentenced to 30 years for murder.

The Worcester Regional Court has sentenced 22-year-old Bongani Banda to an effective 30 years’ direct imprisonment following the brutal robbery and murder of local community worker Herman Niewoudt.The sentencing brings closure to a tragic case that shocked the Western Cape community, stemming from an incident on May 5, 2023, where a discussion about community development turned lethal.

A Brutal Crime near Worcester

The court heard that on the evening of the incident, Niewoudt was traveling on the R46 near Worcester with Banda and his co-accused, Banele Moya. The men had met to discuss their involvement in community work in rural areas. When the group stopped on the side of the road to eat, Banda and Moya—who were both armed with knives—turned on Niewoudt. After robbing him of R3,000 in cash and his cellphone, the pair chased Niewoudt as he attempted to flee into nearby bushes.

The accused caught the victim, forced him to the ground, and repeatedly stabbed him before concealing his body and fleeing in the victim's bakkie.
