The Special Court for the trial of cases registered under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act in Coimbatore on Monday sentenced a woman and her paramour to life imprisonment for murdering her six-year-old son in 2020.Judge K. Vivekananthan awarded the punishment to Divya (36) and Rajadurai (36) of Kovilmedu near Saibaba Colony in the city.The Saibaba Colony police had arrested them for murdering Divya’s son Abhishek in April 2020. The woman had separated from her husband and moved to a rented house near Thudiyalur with her son and three-year-old daughter around six month before the murder. The woman and taxi driver Rajadurai started a live-in relationship. The house owner forced them to vacate the place after finding them torturing the boy.They later moved to a rented house at Kovilmedu where they continued to torture the boy. They beat up the boy with objects such as ladle, chapati roller and stick, apart from branding him with a hot knife, on April 18, 2020. The boy’s condition deteriorated and he died the next day.Pronouncing the quantum of sentence, the court ordered that Divya should undergo life imprisonment after serving 10 years of imprisonment. Rajadurai was sentenced to undergo double life imprisonment after a 13-year jail term. He was also awarded a fine of ₹1.5 lakh. Published - June 22, 2026 06:43 pm IST
