A stolen Toyota Hilux Legend Edition worth R700,000, allegedly destined for cross-border smuggling, was intercepted on the N1 outside Polokwane, leading to the arrest of a 45-year-old man during a coordinated anti-smuggling operation.
The 45-year-old suspect was arrested on Friday, June 19, after police intercepted the stolen Toyota Hilux during an intelligence-driven operation involving the Limpopo Provincial Tracking Team, Provincial Investigation Unit and private security partners. The operation was launched after authorities received information that the vehicle was allegedly being transported from Gauteng to Limpopo for possible smuggling through the Beitbridge border.
Provincial police spokesperson Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba said investigators received information suggesting the vehicle was being transported from Gauteng towards Limpopo as part of a suspected smuggling operation.
“Information indicated the bakkie was being driven from Gauteng province to Limpopo province intended for smuggling through Beitbridge Port of Entry (POE).”
Acting on the intelligence, officers strategically monitored traffic along the N1 South before identifying the vehicle travelling near the Shell Ultra City outside Polokwane.
