In politics, perception is not everything. But in matters of national security, perception can be almost as important as reality itself.

Governments derive their authority not merely from constitutional powers or military strength, but from the confidence citizens place in the individuals entrusted with protecting the nation.

Once that confidence begins to erode, institutions become vulnerable, trust diminishes, and even legitimate actions are viewed through the lens of suspicion.

This is why the continued retention of Bello Matawalle as the Minister of State for Defence deserves renewed scrutiny.

The argument is not that Matawalle has been convicted of any crime.
