Funding for the upgrade of Athens Metro trains operating on Lines 2 and 3, including the installation of air conditioning systems, has been included in the “Transport 2021-2027” program, part of Greece’s National Strategic Reference Framework (NSRF), following a decision by Alternate National Economy & Finance Minister Nikos Papathanasis.
The decision was taken in coordination with Alternate Transport Minister Giorgos Kotsiras, the Ministries of National Economy & Finance and Infrastructure & Transport said.
The project has a total public expenditure of nearly €150 million, with €121 million co-financed through the Cohesion Fund.
It provides for the upgrade of 11 trains that entered service in 2000 and currently serve Lines 2 (red line) and 3 (blue line), as well as the installation of air conditioning units. It also includes upgrades to four substations on Line 2, including energy recovery systems.
The aim is to modernize the passenger train fleet on the two main metro lines, improve daily service for commuters, encourage a shift from private vehicles to public transport, and contribute to energy savings and reduced environmental impact. [AMNA]
