Commuters will have to be patient for a few more years until some of the first-generation trains of the Athens metro acquire air-conditioning, so they stop boiling when the temperature soars, as is the case these days.
These are the oldest trains of the Athens metro on Lines 2 and 3, which do not have air-conditioning by design, while they have now completed 26 years of operation.
“The afternoon I came across such a train, the situation was unbearable, since the carriages were full,” Katerina P., who travels the Syntagma to Doukissis Plakentias route daily, tells Kathimerini.
In order to address one of the main complaints of passengers, rail transport company STASY announced on Tuesday a tender for the complete upgrade and installation of air-conditioning in first-generation trains. In the first phase, the program includes 12 trains of six carriages, including four trains that are stationary, while in the future a tender will be announced for the remaining 16.
The project has a budget of €109 million and is included in the NSRF Transport 2021-2027.
