A DATE for the opening of the new terminal at the ANR Robinson International Airport in Tobago has been set, said Tobago House of Assembly (THA) Chief Secretary Farley Augustine.He made the comment while speaking with the media on Wednesday at the Scarborough Library on the issue of the airport concessionaires and the high rental rates initially afforded to them towards relocating.“We do have a game plan, we have a date for the opening of the airport. However, I would prefer to have the date announced on Monday,” Augustine told the media.He added that he would not support steep fees for Tobago concessionaires.“I will not support nor do I think it is the intention of the Airports Authority to be punitive in any way or to be extremely harsh in terms of their fees...and so I think with some patience and some time people would be moved into the airport effortlessly,” he said.Augustine said the THA would assist in the build-out of the booths at the terminal.“I recognise that for micro entrepreneurs that would be a bit difficult for them to do on their own build-out and to meet the standard we want for a new terminal and so the THA is intervening in that regard,” he said.According to the Office of the Chief Secretary, Augustine hosted a meeting on Wednesday at the new ANR Robinson International Airport terminal with concessionaires as part of preparations for the upcoming transition.“The engagement, alongside the Airports Authority of Trinidad and Tobago (AATT), included another walkthrough of designated commercial spaces where operators are expected to be located, ensuring clarity and readiness ahead of the move,” a release stated.Augustine reiterated that the objective of the visit was to support a smooth transition process and to ensure that all concessionaires are appropriately accommodated within the new facility, the release added.“In support of micro and small business operators, the Tobago House of Assembly has also committed funding to assist with the construction of kiosks for the entrepreneurs who are relocating from the existing terminal,” the release stated.Augustine said in the release this initiative forms part of broader efforts to ensure an inclusive, well-managed transition that supports local enterprise and strengthens the visitor experience at the new terminal.The Airports Authority, in a statement this week, said all existing small and micro-business operators currently conducting business at the airport, including sweet vendors, will be given the opportunity to transition to the new terminal facility. Several concessionaires previously told the Express their applications for space in the new terminal had been denied and others said they decided not to pursue accommodation due to high rental rates.
