Polling stations across Ekiti State have recorded a sustained and significant turnout of voters for the 2026 governorship election. The Commissioner of Police in charge of the Ekiti Governorship Election, Abayomi Shogunle, confirmed the development on Saturday morning, noting that accreditation and voting commenced promptly at 08:30 local time across all local government areas.
The volume of voters has surpassed figures from several previous electoral cycles. “There is a high turnout of voters, which is quite different from what we have witnessed in some previous elections,” Mr Shogunle stated. He observed that voters did not merely arrive in a brief rush at dawn but continued to stream into polling units throughout the morning.
The police chief attributed the strong participation to a distinct surge in public confidence ahead of the polls. According to institutional assessments, this turnout validates pre-election findings where voters expressed a high level of confidence in the state’s security infrastructure.
Security heightened at critical flashpoints
While authorities described the atmosphere across the state as largely peaceful, security agencies remain on high alert. The police leadership acknowledged that several high-risk locations continue to pose a threat to electoral integrity.
