The head of Amnesty International stated that the US-Iran agreement, known as the “Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding,” can only lead to sustainable peace if “the protection of human rights, holding perpetrators of international law violations accountable, providing reparations to victims, and guaranteeing the non-repetition of these violations are placed at the center of attention.”
Agnès Callamard expressed concern on Thursday, June 18, regarding the continuation of domestic repression in Iran, warning that a deal that “merely halts the war temporarily but ignores human rights runs the risk of turning into a cover for the continuation of impunity, occupation, and suppression.”
According to the Secretary General of Amnesty International, the US and Israeli attacks on Iran were “unlawful and a violation of the UN Charter,” which subsequently triggered “unlawful actions” by the authorities of the Islamic Republic.
As stated in Amnesty International’s declaration, this trajectory has resulted in months of widespread suffering and devastation for civilians, alongside human rights violations, including “war crimes.”
Agnès Callamard also pointed out that the war in Iran spilled over into other countries in the region, causing the deaths of over 6,000 people in the Middle East. She stated: “The US-Iran agreement can offer a glimmer of hope for millions of people in the region who have spent the past four months living in conditions of insecurity and uncertainty.”
