Several victims of sexual abuse have told this programme of their despair, after being informed by the Ministry of Justice that their perpetrators might be eligible for early release. It’s part of the government’s prison reforms, aimed at combating overcrowding.
In one letter to a grooming gangs survivor obtained by Channel 4 News, the MOJ says changes to the law may affect release dates.
It says she would “receive a further letter about this by the end of August, which will confirm if changes will or will not be made to the release date for an offender in your case.”
It went on to outline the sentencing changes: “Depending on the type of sentence, this means that some offenders will serve 33% of their sentence in prison, and some will serve 50%.”
