The first phase of backfilling at the legacy waste site of the Kalamassery municipality has been completed. The site, located along the national highway between Kalamassery railway station and Apollo Tyres, is spread across 1.95 acres. The backfilling was carried out as part of the biomining project implemented under the World Bank-aided Kerala Solid Waste Management Project (KSWMP) at a cost of ₹9.20 crore, according to a release.Around 8,230.8 cubic metres of waste were processed and removed in the first phase of the project. Following the extraction, lab-tested bio-soil and inert materials derived from the waste itself were used to backfill and level the dump site. Anju Manoj Mani, chairperson of the municipality’s health standing committee, said the process had helped reclaim around 60 cents of land. The release said that the land will be utilised for various developmental projects, once the entire site is cleared and levelled.
