The Kerala High Court has sought a report from the State government on the amount of compensation awarded to the survivors and the families of the victims in the Mundathikode fireworks accident, which occurred on April 21.The Division Bench of Chief Justice Soumen Sen and Justice V.M. Syam Kumar also directed the government to submit a statement on the steps taken to prevent such accidents.The government further informed the court that a judicial enquiry into the explosion was under way. Mundathikode in Thrissur witnessed a series of powerful explosions at a makeshift fireworks assembly unit, resulting in a death toll of 17, over 24 injured and damage to around 50 houses. The fireworks were being organised by Paramekkavu and Thiruvambady Devaswom Boards, ahead of the Thrissur Pooram. The suo motu petition was initiated by the court based on the news reports and public complaints alleging that strict protocols were not followed while handling the explosives.
