The Commission announced it will join W social during its beta launch
The European Commission was accused of promoting the for-profit, Sweden-based social media platform W Social after announcing its decision to join the network.
The platform was unveiled at the World Economic Forum in Davos in January and officially announced its beta launch in Brussels on Wednesday. W Social has attracted high-profile users by positioning itself as a European-based alternative amid growing momentum for European tech sovereignty across the bloc.
During the platform’s launch presentation on Wednesday, W Social stated that Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, European Council President António Costa, European Parliament President Roberta Metsola, as well as the official accounts of the European Commission, the Council of the EU and the European Parliament, had joined the platform.
The Commission also announced its presence on W Social in a separate social media post on Wednesday, saying that “we are especially happy to join one [platform] that is based in Europe.” The statement prompted questions about whether the institution was effectively promoting the platform.
