Stade Rennais has agreed to sign 19-year-old centre-back Gonçalo Oliveira from Benfica for a fee of €3.5 million. The deal, which came together in early June 2026, includes a buyback clause that allows the Portuguese giants to reclaim the defender down the line.
The player and the price
Oliveira, born on July 4, 2006, is a left-footed centre-back who came through Benfica’s celebrated academy system. He’s been playing with Benfica B in Liga Portugal 2, Portugal’s second division, where he established himself as one of the standout performers among the club’s youth products.
His current market valuation sits at roughly €2 million according to Transfermarkt. Rennes is paying a 75% premium over that estimated value.
The inclusion of a buyback clause is the detail that makes this deal tick for both sides. Benfica gets a guaranteed fee now plus optionality later. If Oliveira develops into a top-flight starter, they can bring him back at a pre-agreed price rather than competing on the open market. If he doesn’t pan out, they’ve already banked €3.5 million for a player who was still on their B team.
