Bayer Leverkusen has completed a €32 million deal to sign Afonso Moreira from Olympique Lyon, landing one of Ligue 1’s most electrifying young wingers in a transfer that perfectly illustrates the economics of modern football’s talent pipeline.

Lyon bought Moreira from Sporting CP for just €2 million last summer. One standout season later, they’re cashing out at 16 times their initial investment.

A breakout season that demanded attention

Moreira’s 2025/26 campaign at Lyon was the kind of debut season that turns a prospect into a priority target. The 21-year-old Portuguese winger racked up 8 goals and 11 assists across 37 appearances, numbers that put him firmly among Ligue 1’s most productive young attackers.

Lyon reportedly tried to hold onto Moreira as negotiations progressed through mid-June. When a club describes an incoming bid as “unrefusable,” that tells you everything about the power dynamics at the negotiating table. Leverkusen came in strong, and Lyon ultimately decided that a €30 million profit on a one-year investment was too good to leave on the table.
