Emily Dalton Smith, the executive Meta tapped to lead product work for its sweeping AI overhaul, is leaving the company. She was appointed to the role in April. It’s now June. That’s not exactly a long tenure.

Smith’s exit, announced internally on June 17, comes as Meta barrels through one of the most disruptive restructurings in its history. The company laid off roughly 8,000 employees, about 10% of its workforce, and reassigned another 7,000 to AI-focused roles.

A decade at Meta, two months in the hot seat

Smith joined Meta back in 2015. She served as VP of product management and was previously head of product for Threads, Meta’s answer to Twitter (now X). By the time she was elevated in April to oversee the AI initiative’s product development, she was one of the more experienced executives in the building.

Her portfolio was significant. Smith was leading product initiatives around internal AI tools, most notably Metamate, Meta’s enterprise AI assistant. The work fell under the broader “AI for Work” transformation overseen by Chief Technology Officer Andrew Bosworth.
