Polish referee Szymon Marciniak lifts Algeria's defender Aissa Mandi as he reacts in pain after being fouled by Argentina forward10 Lionel Messi during the 2026 World Cup Group J football match between at the Kansas City Stadium in Kansas City on Tuesday.
Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos is incensed after the Fifa disciplinary committee extended Themba Zwane’s red card suspension, contrasting the ruling with a lack of punishment for an incident involving Argentina's Lionel Messi.
On Wednesday, Fifa issued a communique stating that Zwane’s initial one-game suspension – handed down after he shoved a player in the face during Bafana’s 2-0 loss to Mexico – had been extended to three matches, citing the seriousness of the offense.
Zwane’s extended sanction means he will only be eligible to play for Bafana if the team advances beyond the Round of 32. Effectively, this rules him out for the remainder of the group stage and the subsequent knockout round.
Ahead of Thursday night's crucial Group A clash against Czechia (6pm) – a match that will prove pivotal for the team's qualification hopes – Broos reflected on the harsh nature of the suspension.
