Bafana Bafana midfielder Themba Zwane's red card suspension has been uplifted to three games.

Fifa’s disciplinary committee has extended Themba Zwane’s match suspension from one game to three games after finding him guilty of a more serious misconduct following Bafana Bafana’s 2-0 defeat to Mexico in the opening game of the 2026 Fifa World Cup.

Zwane made his long-awaited debut in the World Cup, but his cameo was short-lived. He was shown a straight red card by referee Wilton Sampaio after he was found guilty of shoving an opponent in the face.

Initial replays suggested a harsh decision against Zwane, but after Sampaio consulted with the Video Assistant Referee (VAR), the Brazilian referee did not hesitate to send off the Bafana veteran on what was supposed to be a memorable night for him.

Zwane, alongside teammate Sphephelo Sithole, was initially expected to serve a one-match ban against Czechia on Thursday night at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. However, after a review of Zwane’s incident, Fifa decided to sanction him more harshly.
