Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos was not a happy man after Bafana Bafana's Fifa World Cup opener against Mexico.

Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos has lamented a critical, game-changing refereeing decision during his side's FIFA World Cup opening match, after South Africa suffered a bruising 2-0 defeat against co-hosts Mexico at a deafening Estadio Azteca.

South Africa were forced to finish the high-stakes curtain-raiser with just nine men on the pitch after being hit with two costly red cards. Midfielder Sphephelo Sithole and veteran playmaker Themba Zwane were both sent off in a fiery encounter that also saw Mexico captain César Montes dismissed for the hosts.

While Broos completely accepted the first red card handed to his side, the 74-year-old Belgian expressed fierce reservations over the second dismissal, vehemently arguing that the Mexican player was actually the individual who had committed the initial foul.

"I think the first red card, I won't say anything about," Broos remarked during his post-match press conference. "But with the second red card, I think the Mexican player fouled my player. The referee decided something else. It is a massive pity we had to finish the game with nine players."
