Bafana Bafana defender Khuliso Mudau is fouled by Mexico defender Cesar Montes during their 2026 Fifa World Cup match.

Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos has mounted an unapologetic defence of his surprise decision to deploy a three-man defensive backline against Mexico, insisting his tactical blueprint successfully blunted the tournament co-hosts’ ability to launch fluid attacks.

The 74-year-old Belgian raised plenty of eyebrows in the build-up to the World Cup opener by abandoning his traditional defensive shape in favour of a heavily fortified back three. Yet, despite the eventual 2-0 scoreline, Broos adamantly told reporters that the tactical shift achieved exactly what he intended on the pitch.

The last time Bafana went three at the back in a competitive match was in the Africa Cup of Nations last-16 match against Cameroon. On that occasion, the team also struggled to get some cohesion going and ended up losing the match.

On Thursday, Julian Quinones scored the opening goal of the global showpiece after just nine minutes, capitalising on a catastrophic blunder from midfielder Sphephelo Sithole while Bafana Bafana attempted to play out from the back. Veteran striker Raul Jiménez later headed home Mexico's second goal to secure the points at a raucous Estadio Azteca.
