The parties have effectively launched their election campaigns, part of which involves recruiting figures from rival parties and promoting loyal party insiders. The signs are not encouraging. Once again, candidate selection appears set to follow the well-trodden path of recycling career politicians and their heirs. The drawing up of electoral lists is the first – and most important – filter in the political process. It is the parties’ opportunity to demonstrate that they are more than machines for perpetuating themselves.
