June 17 (UPI) -- A kangaroo on the loose for several days in Quebec was captured by provincial officials and taken to a new permanent home at a zoo.

The kangaroo, which had previously been kept in a stable that wildlife rescuers described as unsuitable, was spotted hopping loose last week in an open field in the Boucherville area, on Montreal's South Shore.

The Galahad SPCA posted multiple videos of the kangaroo, nicknamed Joey, but rescuers said they were unable to attempt a capture without permits from provincial authorities.

Personnel from Quebec's Ministry of the Environment announced they safely captured the kangaroo on Tuesday afternoon.

"Following a delicate operation, it has been confirmed that the animal has been captured. It is currently being monitored by professionals to assess its health," a ministry spokesperson said in a statement provided to CTV News.
