Police in Athens said Wednesday they have broken a ring that produced high-quality fake identity and travel documents on an industrial scale and sold them to migrants, while two people have been arrested.

A police statement said the suspects used a coffee shop in the central Athens district of Kato Patissia as a front for their illegal activities and a place where prospective clients could contact them.

The actual production of forged passports, identity cards, driving licenses, residence permits and other documents allegedly took place in one of the suspects’ homes, which was fully equipped with sophisticated printing equipment, seals and passport binding materials.

“[The workshop] could produce high-quality forged documents on a mass scale” to allow migrants who had entered Greece illegally to continue on their travels to Europe’s prosperous heartland, the statement said.
