The South African government has taken control of the deportation process for over 6,000 undocumented Malawian nationals.
The South African government has officially taken over the processing of more than 6,000 undocumented Malawian nationals at a site in Sherwood, Durban transitioning the operation into a formal deportation process after a voluntary repatriation programme stalled.
The eThekwini Municipality mayor, Cyril Xaba, visited the Sherwood site on Tuesday to assess progress and has since engaged senior government stakeholders to unlock bottlenecks and expedite the legal processing of the individuals.
According to the municipality, the operation was initially led by Malawian authorities who were facilitating voluntary repatriation.
"However, after it became evident that progress was slower than anticipated, the South African government has assumed responsibility and initiated a formal deportation process," the municipality said.
