Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Minister Velenkosini Hlabisa has been requested to provide clarity on whether his department intends to implement Coalition Bill ahead of the 2026 local government elections in November.
Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (GoGTA) Velenkosini Hlabisa has been asked to provide clarity whether government plans to accelerate the Coalitions Bill, which aims to stabilise coalitions by 2028, ahead of the local government polls.
Civil group society My Vote Counts (MVC) wrote to Hlabisa, expressing concern that the government intends to rush the bill ahead of the local government elections on November 4. The letter was endorsed by organisations such as Black Sash and Planact.
Signed by MVC executive director Minhaj Jeenah, the letter argues that citizens should be given enough time and opportunity to review and provide input on the proposed bill.
The organisation added that it is concerned that the current timeline creates a significant risk that legislation with profound consequences for South Africa's democratic system may be rushed through Parliament without adequate scrutiny or public participation.
