Parliament has referred the long-awaited Coalition Bill to the Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Portfolio for consideration.
Civil society organisation, My Vote Counts, has warned Parliament against rushing to pass the Municipal Structures Amendment Act, commonly known as the Coalition Bill, before the upcoming November local government elections.
The call follows the bill’s introduction in Parliament by the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) last week.
The Coalition Bill is designed to provide a regulatory framework for establishing coalition governments and aims to tackle the growing issues related to coalitions in local governance.
It was tabled amid the Department of Cogta wishing that the bill be approved before the local government elections.
