An exhibition in Bratislava’s Jewish Community Museum shows how family photographs, ritual objects and even sports memorabilia can restore the memory of a vanished world.

A small family photograph in a travel case, the flag of a Jewish sports club, gifts made in a concentration camp, and an infographic showing the decline in the Jewish population during the wartime Slovak State. Through seemingly modest objects, the latest exhibition at the Jewish Community Museum in Bratislava shows that the history of the Jewish community is not an abstract story that happened “somewhere else”, but the memory of specific people, families, streets and places.
