Dozens of tanker trucks carrying raw milk are currently stranded at Bulgaria’s borders after a new order issued by the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency (BFSA), triggering strong criticism from dairy processors who warn of supply disruption, waste, and potential price increases for basic food products, BGNES reported.

Representatives of the sector say the measure has effectively blocked the movement of raw materials for nearly 10 days, leaving large volumes of milk waiting in high temperatures. According to the Bulgarian Dairy Processors Association (BAM), the situation is already creating operational and financial pressure across the industry.

Poli Peeva from BAM said the order has been presented as a public health safeguard but in practice is damaging production. She stated: “This is an extremely illogical and illegal restriction of raw materials for Bulgarian dairy producers. It threatens production and creates a risk of higher prices for essential foods.”

Industry representatives argue that processors operate under strict quality certification systems and already conduct their own incoming controls. They say the new border measures duplicate existing checks while causing delays that exceed the shelf life of raw milk, which is around 72 hours.
