A coalition of civil society and human rights organisations has petitioned the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, over alleged corruption and extortion by immigration officials at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos, in enforcing Yellow Card requirements.

The Nigerian Human Rights Community (NHRC), a coalition of 130 civil society and human rights groups across Nigeria, alleged that some officials at the airport have turned the process of verifying Yellow Cards into an avenue for illegal financial exploitation of travellers.

In a petition titled “Yellow Card Corruption At Murtala Mohammed Airport,” the group accused immigration personnel at the airport’s arrival section of subjecting returning Nigerians to harassment and demanding money from travellers after allegedly declaring their vaccination documents “fake.”

The petition, addressed to Keyamo and made available to Irohinoodua, was signed by NHRC Deputy Secretary, Yomi Adegbite, and Northern Region Coordinator, Kudu Abubakar.
