Mohammed Al-Owais just reminded the world why goalkeepers are the most underappreciated athletes in professional sports. The 34-year-old Saudi Arabian shot-stopper recorded nine saves in the 2026 FIFA World Cup group-stage match against Uruguay.
A goalkeeper built for big moments
Back in 2022, he earned man-of-the-match honors in the group-stage clash against Argentina. That was the match where Saudi Arabia pulled off one of the greatest upsets in World Cup history, and Al-Owais was central to the effort.
His relationship with Uruguay at World Cups is also worth noting. In the 2018 edition, Saudi Arabia fell 1-0 to Uruguay. Al-Owais was there for that one too.
