The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Monday released its “Green Agenda” manifesto for Bengaluru ahead of the upcoming Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) elections, outlining the roadmap to make the city greener, cleaner and more livable. Releasing the manifesto during a press conference, Rituraj Govind Jha, Karnataka-in-charge, AAP, said Bengaluru, once known as the “Garden City”, is currently grappling with a range of civic and environmental challenges. Arguing that these problems were the result of decades of governance that prioritised the interests of influential lobby groups, Mr. Jha called on citizens to support AAP candidates in the forthcoming GBA elections, adding that the city needed a political alternative.AAP National Organising Secretary Prithvi Reddy said that “garbage and water mafias” had entrenched themselves in waste management and water supply systems, while a politician-contractor nexus was leading to poor-quality public works and misuse of public funds. He also accused land and construction lobbies of encroaching on lakes and stormwater drains, aggravating flooding, and environmental degradation.State president H.N. Chandrashekhar, popularly known as ‘Mukhyamantri’ Chandru, said urban planning, infrastructure development and environmental protection should be guided by public interest rather than private profit. Linking issues such as traffic congestion, disappearing lakes, unsafe roads and declining trees cover and their impact on residents’ daily lives and health, he said “Save Bengaluru” campaign is a people’s movement.
