A 35-year-old Bulgarian man has been detained in Thessaloniki on suspicion of espionage after allegedly using a drone to record sensitive military-related sites in the city.
The investigation was launched following a tip from a resident of eastern Thessaloniki who reported suspicious drone activity without authorization. Police from the specialized anti-terrorism unit later located and arrested the suspect, according to local authorities.
Investigators say the man used a drone equipped with a thermal camera to capture images of installations in the area of the former Farmaki military camp, located in the Kalamaria district. The footage reportedly focused on objects within and around the site, raising security concerns.
During the arrest, officers searched the suspect’s vehicle and discovered the drone believed to have been used in the surveillance activity. The equipment has been seized as part of the ongoing investigation.
Authorities have initiated pre-trial proceedings to determine the purpose behind the activity and whether it constitutes espionage or another offense. Officials are currently examining the circumstances surrounding his presence in the area and his interest in the military facility.
