Russia launched one of its most destructive attacks on Kyiv overnight, striking not only residential neighborhoods but also some of Ukraine’s most important cultural and religious landmarks. Among the sites hit was the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, a UNESCO-listed monastery complex and one of the country’s most revered Christian shrines, where a major fire broke out after what Ukrainian officials described as a direct strike.

According to Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko and Kyiv City Military Administration head Tymur Tkachenko, flames engulfed part of the Lavra complex, including the roof of the Dormition Cathedral. Emergency crews rushed to the scene as authorities assessed the scale of the destruction. Tkachenko said early information indicated the fire was caused by a precise Russian hit and later confirmed that the damage was extensive. “The Russians deliberately struck at the heart of one of the largest Christian shrines,” he said.
The State Emergency Service reported that the blaze spread across approximately 800 square meters of roof space at the cathedral. Images released by church representatives and the Lavra preserve showed firefighters battling the flames as efforts were launched to save valuable religious artifacts. Emergency evacuations of ancient icons, church relics, and sacred items were reportedly carried out during the attack.
