Finance Minister Marie Wilson, who is also in charge of Tirunelveli district, chaired a review meeting with officials here on Saturday.Development works to be undertaken in the district, awareness initiatives against narcotic substances, long-term projects and preparatory measures for the southwest monsoon were discussed at the meeting.Mr. Wilson said dredging work had been completed along 86.06 km of main irrigation canals connected to the rivers in the district and directed the officials to expedite the remaining work in all canals.He also instructed the officials to take measures to prevent accumulation of rainwater on both small and major bridges, ensuring that the public did not face any inconvenience.Pointing out that the water level in the dams were steadily increasing, he stressed the need to complete the desilting of stormwater drains and other water channels at the earliest. All departments should work in close coordination during the monsoon to ensure uninterrupted public services and minimise hardships to residents.Following the meeting, Mr. Wilson distributed welfare measures worth ₹4.17 crore to 519 beneficiaries from across the district.Principal Secretary Sandeep Nanduri, Collector Anand Mohan, Tirunelveli MP Robert Bruce, Superintendent of Police Prasanna Kumar and other officials were present.
