Diplomatic efforts to end more than three months of illegal war against Iran from the United States and Israel moved closer to a breakthrough on Saturday, even as Israel continued to strike and occupy southern Lebanon.

Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, whose government has played a central role in mediation efforts, said a final agreement between Washington and Tehran was likely within 24 hours. He said preparations were under way for an electronic signing followed by technical discussions next week.

Iranian officials struck a more cautious tone. Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said a memorandum of understanding would not be signed on Sunday, although he did not rule out an agreement being reached in the coming days.
